Response to: Merry-Go-Round by Langston Hughes

“Where is Jim Crow section
On this merry-go-round,
Mister, cause I want to ride?
Down South where I come from
White and colored
Can’t sit side by side
Down South on the train

There’s a Jim Crow car.

On the bus we’re put in the back–
But there ain’t no back
To a merry-go-round!
Where’s the horse
For a kid that’s black?”
– Merry-Go-Round by Langston Hughes

There's plenty of room here my little child
‘Cause you’re no longer in the South
Where white and black would sit apart
To let the pillars of their town
Crash and fall till there is no one left a stand

Here your horse awaits you
But beware ‘cause everyone will envy you
Those who ignore and even those who know
Would try to take you down
So hold on tight

You would be alone or you would have company by your side
But leave the merry-go-round for those who can’t move forward
No matter your skin or house
White or black
The ones that are left behind would either reach us new
or die without acknowledging
What a great nation we will build
